How To Determine If You Are Suffering From Sleep Apnea
Of all the things necessary for a good, healthy life, there are some very basic necessities that absolutely cannot be overlooked. Without food, water, air and sleep, and human body just will not function. Without air we will only last a few minutes. Without water, only a few days. Without food, maybe a few weeks. But sleep remains a mystery to most. We sleep on a regular basis, but unlike the other elements, the qualify of our sleep is something we tend to overlook.
Food, water and air are very well understood. A low fat, good carbohydrate diet, a water source free from contamination, and air that is not tainted by second hand smoke are all understood to be necessary for proper human health. But what about sleep? How do we know if the sleep we are getting every night is good quality, or bad quality? The truth is that sleep is still a relatively new field of science in western medicine.
We know that there different levels of sleep that we cycle through each night. Likely the most well known, yet least understood is REM sleep when we dream. We all know that we dream, and we all suspect that dreams are necessary for psychological and mental health, but we’re not sure why.
Many things can interfere with our ability to get a good nights rest every night. One of the main conditions which people suffer from is sleep apnea. There are two reasons why apnea symptoms are overlooked. One is that obviously, they occur while we are sleeping, so we don’t usually remember them the next day. Another reason is that they are very similar to a host of other symptoms, such as stress and general anxiety. These include headaches, and general restlessness during the day.
If you suspect you have sleep apnea, many have suggested keeping a sleep journal. When you record everything you can think of as soon as you wake up every morning, this can shed some light on your condition. How often you wake up during the night, the quality of your sleep, and anything else you can think of. The more data you collect, the easier it will be for your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis.
Although sleep apnea can have very dangerous side effects, it can easily be treated. Which is all the more reason you should take steps today, so that you can get a good nights rest tomorrow.
