Why Shopping Around For Car Insurance Can Save You Big Money
A quarter of UK drivers are missing out on massive car insurance savings by simply failing to shop around for a cheaper deal.
Worrying new research from price comparison website moneysupermarket.com revealed that many motorists were losing out on more than £200 a year by automatically renewing their annual car cover.
The study found that though 36% of drivers did seek out a cheaper deal, another 25% didn’t even try to find an alternative provider.
Of these, 15% were under the impression that they wouldn’t be able to find cheaper car insurance, while a staggering 10% said they just couldn’t be bothered to shop around. This complacent attitude was even worse in London and the north east of England, with a third of drivers choosing to automatically renew their policy.
The thriftiest motorists willing to hunt out a better car insurance quote were in Yorkshire and the Humber (46%), Wales (44%) and the West Midlands (41%).
Drivers aged 18-34 are more likely to switch to a new provider (41%), while the over 55s were more loyal and liable to ask their current insurance company to match any cheaper offer they find.
On average, the research shows that motorists stick with their insurance provider for 2.8 years, with over 55s more loyal (3.5 years) than younger drivers, who change suppliers nearly every two years.
Shopping around to compare car insurance quotes online is just one way a driver can cut their car cover costs.
Getting an alarm and immobiliser system fitted can bring prices down, as can cutting out added extras like courtesy car provision, parking in a drive or garage instead of the main road, altering the amount of excess, and paying up front rather than choosing monthly payments.
Getting a Pass Plus certificate can also bring premiums down for new drivers, and of course, another easy way to keep insurance costs down is to drive safely and within speed limits. Penalty points can send insurance prices skywards.
